Hygiene: What was Old is New

Before COVID-19, hygiene within packing plants was solely thought of as protecting food, now it also includes protecting employees. The CDC reported on April 27th, “the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has infected 4,913 employees at meat and poultry processing facilities — or 3 percent of that workforce — with 20 deaths.”

Fresh Express Implicated in U.S. Cyclospora Outbreak

According to Food Safety Magazine, the CDC, FDA and all state and local officials continue to investigate the “multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections potentially linked to salad products that were made by Fresh Express containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrots and sold in several regions of the United States.” “Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite.” The investigation is still ongoing.
